How to Stop Doing Everything for Your Kids with Hayley Caddes

When our kids are babies, doing everything for them makes total sense. They physically can't do it themselves. But somewhere along the way, it turns into a habit, and one day you look up and wonder why you're still doing it at 8, 10, or 12. I'll be honest, I felt very seen in this conversation. I'm still playing a little catch-up on this in my own house.

My guest today is Hayley Caddes, co-founder and COO of Not Therapy, a lived-experience mentorship company for stuck young adults and their families. Hayley was the "troubled teen" first, and now she and her team of coaches work every day with young adults who are struggling to launch into real life. This is not a conversation about what parents have done wrong. It's about skills most of us were never taught, and how to start handing ownership back to our kids, especially if you're raising a neurodivergent child who may need more support for longer. Whether your kids are still little or already out of the house, Hayley shares what you can start doing right now.

In This Episode, I'll Cover:

  • The two things kids quietly absorb when we keep handling the hard stuff for them, and how it shows up years later.
  • The one small thing Hayley suggests trying with your kids this week, and how to talk about it so it doesn't feel like a punishment.
  • What to do if your kids have already left home, and why your role looks completely different at 22 than it did at 12.
  • The shift that makes room for more of the good stuff in your relationship with your grown kids.
