Intentions over Resolutions

I LOVE the start of a New Year.   I love setting goals. I love reviewing the past year and thinking about what I want to keep the same, what I want to change, and what I want to add more of or remove.  I love cleaning out closets, desk drawers, and file cabinets. I’m all about the fresh start.

I LOVE the start of a New Year.   I love setting goals. I love reviewing the past year and thinking about what I want to keep the same, what I want to change, and what I want to add more of or remove.  I love cleaning out closets, desk drawers, and file cabinets. I’m all about the fresh start.

Every year for as long as I can remember, I make a list of New Year’s Resolutions.  Grace has done this with me the last few years as well…and we even roped Jeff into it.  On January 1st, I pull out the list we made as family 1 year ago. It is really fun to review it and talk about our year together.

This year, I really struggled to come up with resolutions.  I wasn’t sure why…but it just wasn’t coming to me. Then, the other morning, I was listening to a guided meditation about Intentions and it hit me like a TON of bricks.  Intentions vs. Resolutions…on the outside, they may seem the same but they are not.

Intentions are all about creating.  Intentions focus on your mindfulness and are not tied to a specific outcome. Intentions allow you to focus on building something new.  They keep you looking forward. Intentions give you a framework to focus on great things without dictating exactly how it will be done.

Resolutions are usually something we feel we need to fix.  They are outcome based. When we don’t execute them, we feel like a failure.  Resolutions keep us thinking about the past instead of the future…we are focused on what went wrong that we want to change.  The are not flexible.

I have been working so hard on mindset and manifestation that I was actually fighting the idea of creating resolutions…and that is a GOOD thing!  I don’t want to spend 2019 looking back and trying to fix what went wrong last year. I want to look ahead and focus on the great things that are coming!

So, this year, I have a list of intentions….not resolutions  I have a list of things I want to create and experience. Rather than looking back, I am looking FORWARD.
