A Different Way to Think About Goals
Have you ever sat down to set goals or dream about the future—only to feel completely stuck? Maybe you’ve spent years in survival mode, juggling work, home, relationships, and responsibilities, so much so that you don’t even know what you want anymore. Or maybe you finally have more time and space in your life, yet when someone asks, What do you want for yourself?—you have no idea how to answer.
For some, the idea of dreaming feels exhausting—because when would you even have time to do something for yourself? For others, it might feel intimidating—because what if you get it wrong? And for many, it feels like a luxury—something that other people get to do, but not you.
No matter where you are, you’re not alone. And that’s why I love this simple, no-pressure exercise that Heather Chauvin shared with me: The "Wouldn’t It Be Nice If" List.
Unlike traditional goal-setting, this isn’t about setting deadlines or creating an action plan. It’s simply about giving yourself permission to dream again. To imagine possibilities without judgment, guilt, or pressure. And if you’ve ever struggled to figure out what you truly want, this is the perfect place to start.
Grab a Journal (or a Notes App) and Start Writing
Instead of forcing yourself to come up with “the perfect goal,” simply complete the sentence: Wouldn’t it be nice if… Write down anything that comes to mind—big or small. Wouldn’t it be nice if I had more time for myself? Wouldn’t it be nice if I could take Fridays off? Wouldn’t it be nice if I didn’t have to do laundry? There are no right or wrong answers—just let your thoughts flow.
Detach from "To-Do List" Thinking
This isn’t about adding more tasks to your plate—it’s about exploring possibilities. Don’t judge what comes up or immediately start figuring out how to make it happen. This is just about giving yourself space to imagine what could be.
Look for Patterns and Feelings
Once you have a list, review it and ask: What is the feeling I’m truly after? Maybe your list reflects a desire for more freedom, rest, creativity, or connection. Identifying these underlying emotions can give you clarity on what you actually crave in your life.
Choose One Small Action to Start Moving Toward It
Pick one thing from your list and ask: What’s a tiny step I could take toward this? If your list says Wouldn’t it be nice if I could have one slow morning each week?—try scheduling an extra 15 minutes to yourself one morning. Small shifts add up over time.
If you’ve been feeling disconnected from your own dreams and desires, the "Wouldn’t It Be Nice If" List is a great place to start. It’s a judgment-free way to explore what excites you, what you crave, and how you want to feel—without the pressure of turning everything into an immediate goal.
Take five minutes today and try it out. You might be surprised by what comes up!
