Are You Too Organized?
Hey friend! Did you know there’s such a thing as being too organized? Yep, you heard me right! If you’ve got rainbow binders, color-coded folders, or perfectly labeled bins—but still can’t find what you need—you might be over-organizing.
The goal of organizing is simple: Can you find what you need with ease? If the answer is no, it’s time to step back and simplify. Let me show you how to strike the perfect harmony between chaos and color-coded overwhelm.
Ask Yourself the Big Question
Any time you’re searching for something, pause and ask: Can I find what I need with ease? If it takes too long or feels overwhelming, it’s a sign you’re either over-organized or under-organized.
Simplify Over-Organized Systems
If you’ve got 15 binders for every course or training, it’s time to simplify. Create one central place for all notes—digital or paper—that’s easy to search.
Quick Tip: Use Google Docs for digital notes (hello, search bar!) or create an index system for your paper binders, like the back of a cookbook.
Organize in a Way That Works for YOU
Your organizing style doesn’t need to impress anyone but yourself! Ask: How does my brain naturally look for things?
Example: My spice rack is alphabetical because that’s how I think. My friend? She organizes spices by types of seasoning. Both work!
If it makes sense to you, it’s the right system.
Resist the Urge to Buy ALL the Bins
Before running to The Container Store for pretty supplies, figure out what you need to organize and how you’ll search for it. Supplies come last, not first.
Example: Clean out the kitchen junk drawer first, decide what you are going to keep in there, then decide what containers or dividers will support that.
Start Small: Notice the “Sticking Points”
Over the next week, pay attention to where you struggle to find things. Are they over-organized (too many places)? Under-organized (chaotic mess)? Once you identify the problem, fix it with simplicity in mind.
Remember, organizing isn’t about how pretty something looks—it’s about how functional it is for YOU. The magic question: Can I find what I need with ease? If the answer’s no, take a step back, rework, and give yourself permission to organize in a way that fits your brain and your life.
Now it’s your turn! Look for one area that feels over-organized this week and ask: “How can I simplify this so I can find what I need faster?” Let me know how it goes—tag me on Instagram or send me a message!
