Delegating vs. Transfer of Ownership: What's the Difference?
You know that feeling when you finally delegate a task, thinking it’s off your plate—only to find yourself checking in, reminding, and following up to make sure it actually gets done? Yeah, I’ve been there too.
Here’s how it usually played out: I’d sit down, assign tasks to my family, and feel so accomplished. But then, a day or two later, I’d find myself asking, Did you do this yet? When are you planning to get that done? And if I didn’t ask? Well… some things just didn’t happen at all.
Even though I had “delegated” those tasks, I was still the one tracking them, thinking about them, and making sure they got done—which meant I was still carrying the mental load. That’s when I realized that simply assigning a task isn’t the same as truly letting go of it. And if I really wanted to lighten my load, I had to make one key shift: stop managing the list and hand over full ownership instead.
If you’re tired of delegating instead of transferring ownership, here’s how to finally get tasks off your plate—for good.
Hand Over the Task—AND the Responsibility
Delegating alone isn’t enough. To really lighten your load, you need to offload the responsibility of tracking and follow-up. Instead of keeping the task on your list with someone else’s name next to it, the real goal is to remove it entirely. Whoever owns the task should also own remembering it, checking in on it, and making sure it gets done.
Let Go of How It Gets Done
This is the hard part. True transferring of ownership means releasing control over how the task is completed. Maybe the groceries aren’t bought exactly how you’d do it, or the laundry isn’t folded perfectly—but the job is done, and that’s what matters. Resist the urge to micromanage and embrace the freedom that “done is better than perfect.”
Set Expectations, Then Step Away
If a task has a deadline or specific requirements, make those clear when you transfer it. After that, step away and trust that the person responsible will handle it. No checking in, no reminding—just let them own it. If it doesn’t get done, let them experience the natural consequences instead of swooping in to fix it.
Start with One Task and See How It Feels
This shift takes practice! Pick one thing this week that you will fully remove from your mental load—not just by name, but by thought and follow-up. Notice how it feels when you truly let go, and build from there.
If your to-do list is still filled with tasks that other people are responsible for, it’s time to take the final step and let them go completely. Transferring of ownership isn’t just about assigning—it’s about freeing up your mental space so you can focus on what actually matters. Try it this week, and see how much lighter your load feels!

This Week’s Buzz: Should you use an AI planning tool?
Lately, I’ve been seeing more and more AI planning tools pop up, all promising to create the perfect schedule for you. So, I decided to test a couple of them myself. And let’s just say… I was not impressed.
AI might be great for brainstorming and automation, but when it comes to planning your time, it completely misses the mark. It doesn’t account for life’s unpredictability, your personal energy levels, or the need for flexibility—things that are essential for creating a plan that actually works.
In this week’s Weekly Buzz, I’m sharing exactly why AI can’t replace real planning, who might benefit from it in a limited way, and why, for now, I won’t be recommending these tools.
