How to Build a Morning Routine That Actually Works
Feeling overwhelmed or irritable before the day even begins? You’re not alone. The way you start your morning has a huge impact on the rest of your day, but most people confuse a *task list* with a *routine.*
This time of year is a great time to assess your morning routine and determine if it needs tweaking.
Here are 5 simple steps you can take TODAY transition from a morning task list that serves others to a morning routine that serves you.
Step 1. Understand the Difference Between a Morning Routine vs. a Morning Task List
A morning task list includes chores like making breakfast, packing lunches, or walking the dog—tasks often in service to others that drain your energy. - A morning routine consists of activities that energize, relax, or refuel you. These are things you enjoy doing, like reading, dancing to music, or taking a quiet moment for yourself. These are things that put you in the right mental space to enjoy your day.
Step 2: Identify What Fuels You
Take 2-3 minutes to brainstorm: What small activities relax, inspire, or recharge you?
Examples: Reading a book for 5 minutes, listening to music, journaling, dnacing, stretching, or sipping coffee quietly before anyone wakes up.
Remember: A morning routine doesn’t have to be silent or still—it can include movement or fun!
Step 3: Start Small - Just 5 Minutes
Choose one activity from your list that you can do for 5 minutes. Set your alarm 5 minutes earlier tomorrow. Just 5 minutes. You can do that!
Not sure what to pick? Test a new activity each day this week. See which one makes you feel the most energized and relaxed.
Step 4: Make It Realistic for Your Life
Your routine should reflect your current reality, not an Instagram-worthy ideal.
For example: If your kids wake up early, try 5 minutes of quiet time before they get up.
Short on time? Play your favorite upbeat song while brushing your teeth or dance it out in the kitchen.
If you have very early risers (or infants), schedule your morning routine time during their first nap.
Step 5: Track Your Week and Adjust
After trying your 5-minute morning routine for a week, reflect: How did it impact your mood, energy, or focus for the day?
If needed, tweak your activity or the timing until it fits seamlessly into your mornings. And, if you are loving it and want more, you can always add a second (or third activity) to fit your needs!
