How to Prevent Overplanning
If you’re someone who loves a good plan (hi, me too), it might surprise you to hear this—but yes, it’s absolutely possible to *overplan*. And when it happens, it often leaves you feeling more overwhelmed, not less.
Maybe you’ve finally embraced weekly planning and want to get everything just right. Or maybe life feels out of control, and planning gives you a sense of structure again. Either way, you might find yourself mapping out every second of every day… and then crashing when real life inevitably doesn’t cooperate.
Today, I’m sharing how to spot the signs of overplanning and what to do instead—so you can create plans that are empowering, not exhausting.
Leave space in your schedule—on purpose.
If your days are booked from the moment you wake up until the minute your head hits the pillow, it’s no wonder you feel like one small thing derails the entire day. Start adding white space into your plans (I call it buffer time). These built-in pauses give your day breathing room and protect you from that frustrating domino effect when one task runs late.
Check how many of your tasks are truly urgent.
After you create your weekly plan, take a step back and ask: how much of this is urgent and important? If everything on your list feels like it’s on fire, you may be living in what I call “Quadrant 1 overload.” It’s time to reassess. A sustainable plan makes space for the important-but-not-urgent things too—the ones that move your big goals forward without burning you out.
Watch for constant catch-up mode.
If every Friday is filled with leftovers from Thursday (and Monday… and Wednesday…), your plans are too full. Overflow that spills into your weekends or the next week isn’t a sign that you need to work harder—it’s a sign that your schedule needs adjusting.
Planning should help you feel calm, focused, and in control—not like you’re racing to keep up with your own schedule. If your weekly plans feel more like wishful thinking than something you can actually stick to, take a moment to simplify.
Protect your white space. Be honest about your priorities. And remember: your planner is here to serve you, not the other way around.
