How to Reverse Organize
Hey friend! If you’ve ever spent hours organizing a space only for it to become cluttered again in days, you’re not alone. The problem? We usually start with stuff—sorting, labeling, and trying to make it all fit. But what if we flipped that approach?
Instead of organizing around what you have, try reverse organizing—a simple strategy that I learned a few years ago from Laura Smith of Get Organized HQ.
The strategy? Put function first.
This method helps you create spaces that actually work for your daily life, making it easier to stay organized long-term. I first tried it in 2021, and let me tell you—it’s a game-changer! Here’s how you can do it too.
Start with an Empty Space
Instead of organizing what’s already there, start fresh. Clear out a drawer, a shelf, or even your entire desk. Then ask yourself: What do I actually need to use in this space? This ensures that only the most important and frequently used items make their way back.
Pay Attention to What You Reach for Most
Before putting things back, take note of what you naturally reach for. For example, when I did this with my desk, I realized I was constantly getting up from my desk to grab things that weren’t even in my drawers—while some rarely used items were taking up prime real estate! Prioritize easy access for the things you use daily.
Use a "Test Run" Approach
Not sure what belongs where? Try a one-week test. In the kitchen, for example, place utensils in a temporary container on the counter. As you use them, put them back in the drawer—anything left in the container at the end of the week might not need to take up valuable space.
Be Real About What You Actually Use
We all have items we wish we used more often—fancy kitchen gadgets, craft supplies, workout gear. But if something has been sitting untouched for months (or years), it’s time to reconsider its place. If you’re not ready to let go, store it somewhere less accessible instead of cluttering your most-used spaces.
Create a Home for Everything
Once you’ve determined what truly belongs in the space, assign each item a designated spot—one that makes sense for how you use it. Group similar items together, use bins or dividers where needed and make it easy to maintain over time.
Reverse organizing is a simple yet powerful way to create a home that works for you instead of constantly fighting against the clutter. Start small—pick a drawer, your desk, or even a single shelf, and put this method to the test. You might be surprised at how much easier it is to keep things organized when everything is set up with intention!
Happy organizing!
