How to Stop Losing Focus
You sit down to finally tackle that project. You're ready. Focused. Determined.
Then your password doesn't work.
So you open your password manager and see five urgent breach notifications. Better handle those now or you'll forget, right? That leads you to your email, where you spot the updated basketball schedule. Can't forget to add that. Before you know it, thirty minutes gone and zero progress on what you actually sat down to do.
You might not be bad at focusing. Those household admin tasks—the permission slips, portals, passwords, scheduling—are yanking you away constantly. And you handle them immediately because your brain has learned: if I don't do this right now, it'll never get done.
But the cost? You lose focus, momentum, and entire chunks of your day to constant task-switching.
Here's a simple system that will help you protect your focus and stop letting these tasks hijack your day.
1. Capture it, don't handle it
Next time one of those tasks pops up, don't handle it. Jot it down in one place. A post-it note. Your phone's notes app. Whatever. Just pick one place and stick with it.
Password notifications? Write "Update passwords." Basketball schedule? "Add games to calendar." You're not ignoring these. You're parking them.
2. Schedule household COO time
Block off specific time on your calendar for handling all those captured tasks. I do about two hours every weekend. You might need 30 minutes daily if you've got five kids, or an hour weekly if you're an empty nester.
This needs to be an actual appointment with yourself. Not "I'll get to it later." Your brain needs to see when it's happening.
3. Trust the system
Here's why this works. When your brain sees dedicated time on your calendar, it can relax. You're not going to forget. You have a plan.
When that form anxiety hits, look at your calendar and remind yourself it's handled. You're retraining your brain to stop feeling like everything has to be done right now.
4. Batch everything during your scheduled time
When your household COO appointment arrives, grab your coffee and knock everything out at once. All the forms. All the passwords. All the scheduling. One focused chunk instead of fifteen daily interruptions.
You'll feel way less frantic handling these tasks in one batch than jumping in and out of that mode all week long.
Ready to protect your focus?
Decide where your capture list will live. Then create your first household COO appointment this week. Start with your best guess and adjust as you go.
Your focus is about to get so much better.
