You are allowed to prioritize YOU
Here's something that might make you squirm a little: You don't have to put everyone else's needs before your own to be a good person. I know, I know... that goes against everything we've been taught as women.
But what if I told you that constantly putting yourself last isn't noble or selfless? It's actually keeping you stuck in overwhelm and preventing you from showing up as your best self for anyone. Today, we're flipping the script on this people-pleasing madness.
Stop apologizing for having needs.
Right now, you probably preface every personal request with "I know this sounds selfish, but..." or "I hate to ask, but..." Stop it. Your needs aren't an inconvenience or a character flaw. They're requirements for you to function as a whole human being. Practice saying "I need..." without the apologetic preamble. Your time, your energy, your mental space matter just as much as everyone else's.
Create your "Megan, Megs, and Mom" framework.
Think about the different roles you play in your life. For me, I am Megan the individual, Megs the wife, and Mom the caregiver. Write them down. Now here's the key: schedule time for ALL of these parts of yourself, not just the ones serving other people. Block time for the "you" who existed before all these other roles. She still matters. She still deserves space on your calendar.
Practice the "me-first" decision.
This week, make at least one choice that puts your needs first, even if it disappoints someone else. Maybe you skip the school event that drains your energy. Maybe you say no to hosting family dinner because you need rest. Maybe you work on your project instead of playing another round of Go Fish. Notice how the world doesn't actually end when you choose yourself. Notice how you show up better everywhere else when you're not running on empty.
You can't pour from an empty cup, and constantly putting yourself last guarantees that cup stays bone dry. When you give yourself permission to prioritize your own needs alongside everyone else's, something magical happens. You stop feeling resentful. You stop feeling overwhelmed. You start showing up as someone who's genuinely present because you're not running on fumes. You're not being selfish. You're being smart. And everyone around you benefits when you're operating from a place of fulfillment instead of depletion.
